Md Ashikur Rahman is a Planner, Cartographer, Academician and Researcher with more than ten years of professional experience in Geographical Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing, Satellite Oceanography, Space Technology, Photogrammetry, UAV technology and Marine Spatial Planning (MSP). He currently serves as a Senior Research Officer at the Institute of Bay of Bengal & Bangladesh Studies (IBBBS), Bangladesh Maritime University (BMU), where he has been working in the university since February 2020. He also serves as an Instructor and course teacher in GIS, Remote Sensing and Satellite Oceanography, and is an Executive Editor of the peer-reviewed IBBBS Journal. Mr Ashikur’s research focuses on the application of geospatial science and emerging technologies to coastal and marine environments, with particular emphasis on ecosystem-based Marine Spatial Planning, Integrated Coastal Management, sustainable ocean governance, environmental monitoring, coastal change detection, blue carbon and carbon footprint, water and soil salinity assessment, seawater quality, satellite-derived oceanographic parameters and spatial decision-making. His emerging interests include GeoAI, machine learning, UAV-based mapping, satellite technology and geospatial modelling for sustainable management of coastal and marine resources. As an academic trainer and subject-matter expert, he has conducted professional training on GIS, Remote Sensing, Photogrammetry and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technology, including training programmes involving Bangladesh Navy Hydrographic & Oceanographic Centre, National Oceanographic and Maritime Institute, Khulna University and Independent University, Bangladesh. He is also involved in research supervision at the Institute of Remote Sensing and GIS, Jahangirnagar University. His training expertise covers ArcGIS, GeoAI, ArcPy, google earth engine for satellite image acquisition and processing, image enhancement and classification, GIS spatial analysis, georeferencing, land-use/land-cover mapping, photogrammetry, UAV applications, environmental modelling and geospatial data analysis. He holds a Bachelor of Urban & Regional Planning from Khulna University of Engineering & Technology and an MSc in GIS for Environment and Development from Jahangirnagar University. He is currently pursuing a PhD at the University of Dhaka, researching Geospatial Approach for Establishing Ecosystem-based Marine Spatial Planning in the Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh. Mr Rahman has authored and co-authored peer reviewed and Scopus Indexed research articles, conference papers, professional publications and policy-oriented opinion pieces. His work contributes to the advancement of geospatial technology, ocean science, environmental sustainability and evidence-based maritime planning in Bangladesh and beyond.
