I provided guidance to the Afghanistan Customs Department (ACD) research team on research techniques, methodology, and data analysis. I facilitated the extension of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UNODC and ACD and coordinated research activities with other relevant Afghan ministries, including the Ministry of Counter Narcotics (MCN), Counter Narcotics Police of Afghanistan (CNPA), and Afghanistan Border Police (ABP). I translated research tools from English into Farsi, organized regular meetings with stakeholders, and assisted in identifying new research topics. I drafted a concept note for the research study “precursor trafficking to Afghanistan”. Additionally, I linked ACD’s research activities to other UNODC projects, submitted monthly progress reports, and provided administrative support for the implementation of a capacity-building project. I conducted focus group discussions and in-depth qualitative interviews to assess the impacts of drugs on users and their families across various provinces of Afghanistan, including Kabul. I translated the UNODC report "Opiate Trafficking through the Northern Route" into Farsi and edited the Farsi version of the Ministry of Counter Narcotics (MCN) report "Afghanistan Inter-Provincial Opiate Trafficking Dynamics." I also translated research tools and conducted studies on drug trafficking in Afghanistan, preparing bi-weekly and monthly reports. I collaborated closely with research units in the MCN, Counter Narcotics Police (CNPA), Afghanistan Customs Department (ACD), and the Drugs Demand Reduction Department (DDR) of the Ministry of Public Health. My work involved collecting and analyzing data on the connections between drug trafficking and the broader economy, building contacts, and liaising with various ministries and counterparts. Additionally, I provided regular updates to the AOTP management in Vienna on precursor trafficking routes and developments in Afghanistan’s drug-related efforts.

I recruited, trained, and monitored surveyors across various provinces. I conducted focus group discussions and qualitative interviews with key informants and stakeholders regarding opium poppy cultivation, production, and smuggling in Herat and Farah provinces. I collected weekly and monthly seizure reports from counter-narcotics police to analyze trends in smuggling and trafficking routes. I undertook provincial missions to meet with counter-narcotics and border police officials to get information on drug production and smuggling trends in their respective areas. In 2014, I led a research study on illegal pharmaceuticals across five regions of Afghanistan. Additionally, I established and maintained working relationships with key stakeholders and relevant counterparts.

I implemented various surveys across five provinces in the western region of Afghanistan, conducting focus group discussions and qualitative interviews with farmers and stakeholders regarding opium poppy cultivation. I monitored and evaluated survey activities to ensure they adhered to the planned methodology. I recruited, trained, and deployed nearly sixty surveyors for different surveys in the region. I coordinated with provincial and district governors to facilitate survey activities at the local level and supervised seven surveys, including the Governor-Lead Eradication Survey, Opium Village Survey, and Yield Survey. Additionally, I represented the UNODC Survey Section in meetings with the UN and local government.
