Description
Desired start date: 15/09/2026
Duration of the mission: 6 months
Location: N'DJAMENA
SOLIDARITES INTERNATIONAL (SI) is an international humanitarian aid association which, since more than 40 years, has been providing assistance to populations affected by armed conflicts and natural disasters by meeting their basic needs for food, water and shelter. Particularly committed to the fight against diseases linked to unsafe water, the leading cause of death in the world, SI's interventions provide expertise in the field of access to drinking water, sanitation and hygiene promotion, but also in the essential area of food security and livelihoods. Present in some twenty countries, the SI teams – 2500 people in total, made up of expatriates, national staff, permanent staff at HQ, and a few volunteers - intervene with professionalism and commitment while respecting cultural norms.
Following the outbreak of the conflict in April 2023 and forced evacuation of Khartoum and West Darfur (El Geneina), SI was the first international NGO to re-enter Darfur and resume its emergency response.
In February 2024, SI opened a base in North Darfur to provide emergency assistance to populations, as very few humanitarian organizations were operational in the state. Similarly, SI opened an office in Zalingei, Central Darfur in November 2024. Today, thanks to the support of SHF, CDCS, ECHO and BHA, activities are being implemented in West Darfur, Central Darfur, North Darfur, Gedaref and Khartoum States across WASH, Shelter and NFI support, Food Security and Livelihood sectors.
In West Darfur, the main share of the portfolio remains WASH with the provision of water through water trucking, rehabilitation of water points/water yards, borehole drilling, hygiene promotion, sanitation (emergency latrine construction, semi-permanent latrine, showers, desludging), solid waste management, WASH NFI distribution, and WASH in Health etc. Besides, SI implements food assistance mostly through cash and voucher modalities. West Darfur team also implements agricultural support activities (seeds distribution, provision of tools, training) as well as market strengthening support.
In Central Darfur. The activities mostly focus on WASH and CVA. SI also has an Emergency Response Team based in Zalingei, Central Darfur, roving across Central and West Darfur, implementing rapid responses in WASH, Shelter/NFI and Food (CVA).
In North Darfur, SI was one first to intervene and are presently a leader in WASH response. The FSL work has brought in some great result in North Darfur.
Recently, we opened our new base in Al Dein in East Darfur. The teams are already working on strong WASH response along with some critical Cash response. The team their woudl also be responsible to assess and open new areas in Kordofans.
In the Eastern part of the country, SI is present with Wash and FSL activities in Gedaref Khartoum and Jazeera, under ECHO, CDCS, SHF and US funds.
Most of the programs are being implemented in Consortium, including 2 led by SI, and require strong coordination efforts to provide area-based interventions. SI also has a strong localization approach, with diverse local partners in all states.
General Objective:
The WASH coordinator contributes to the development of Solidarités International strategy by proposing a sector-based strategy in the field of WASH including IWRM.
He/she specifically guarantees the quality and suitability of proposed technical approaches and ensures the appropriateness of WASH activities and general SI objectives to the needs of the local populations.
He/she coordinates the project cycle and more particularly the operational monitoring of WASH programs implemented in the intervention country.
He/she contributes to the process of capitalization and the improvement of Solidarités International methods and techniques in the field of WASH.
He/she will also work closely with cluster to influence the sector decisions strongly. Work closely, where needed, with donor technical team on assessment, visits, program design.
The main challenge:
The job requires opening new areas, going into new or less support areas independently and leading a team too. Conflict, language and many other complexity would appear. In the field the amenities would be almost minimal. Strong mental resilience is crucial for this position.
Priorities for the 2/3 first months:
Support the East Darfur and Kordofan initiative, Review and suggest WASH strategy for Central Darfur/ South Darfur, Proposal and reporting support for specific projects.
Security Constraints:
In Ndjamena, the situation is relatively calm, although caution is required. In Sudan, the situation is extremely volatile, and a strict adherence to security rules is mandatory.

Breaks: During the assignment, a system of alternation between work and time off is implemented at the rate of 7 working days every three months (with a USD 850 break allowance, allocated by Sl). To these breaks periods, SI grants one (1) additional rest day per month worked.
