Organisation Background:
Founded in 2011, the International NGO Safety Organisation (INSO) is the safety coordination system for humanitarian response. We support over 1,300 local and international NGOs across the world’s most insecure regions. Our mission is to help those who help others.
INSO provides a range of free services, including real-time incident tracking, analytical reports, safety-related data and mapping, crisis management support, staff orientations, and training that helps keep aid workers safe. We also work at the policy level to strengthen the evidence base and improve interagency coordination for a more effective and resilient humanitarian system.
Our work goes beyond saving individual lives to enable humanitarian operations in high-risk countries.
INSO Syria:
The Syria program supports more than 215 NGOs to deliver vitally needed aid and assistance to an estimated 13.1 million people in need across the country. First launched as an emergency response operation in 2014, INSO Syria has grown to become a regional program with a presence in all Syria response hubs and the country office in Amman, Jordan.
The Syria conflict is unique and complex; you will find that every day is different and there is always more to learn.
Job Summary:
As the GIS Officer you will support INSO’s mission by producing high-quality maps and spatial analysis to enhance situational awareness for the NGO community in Syria. Working closely with the Information Manager and team, you will ensure accurate, timely, and visually effective geographic information products, while also providing technical and IT support as needed.
Main Responsibilities:
Design and produce accurate, high-quality static and web maps (incident, area of influence, reference, and analytical).
Manage and update INSO’s spatial data and ensure linkage with the incident database.
Support field data collection and integrate findings into mapping outputs.
Maintain organized, updated geospatial datasets and archives.
Provide GIS training and technical guidance to staff.
Assist with IT support and the management of information systems.
Contribute to visual data outputs (graphics, charts, dashboards).
Stay informed on security dynamics and geographical developments across Syria.
Support monthly reporting and coordination meetings.
Mandatory Requirements:
Syrian Nationals Only
At least 2 years of GIS experience, ideally in the humanitarian sector.
Advanced proficiency in ArcGIS Pro and QGIS.
Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office 365, including Power BI.
Fluency in Arabic and English (written and spoken).
Experience with data visualization tools and Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign).
Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
Bachelor’s degree in Geography, GIS, or related field.
Familiarity with Python scripting for GIS automation (desirable).
Knowledge of the Syrian operational context is an advantage.
Key Competencies:
Accuracy – Ensures precision and consistency in data, analysis, and outputs.
Initiative – Proactively identifies needs and proposes innovative GIS solutions.
Collaboration – Works effectively within a team, fostering trust and information sharing.
Adaptability – Responds efficiently to changing priorities and complex environments.
Integrity – Upholds confidentiality, professionalism, and impartiality at all times.
INSO’s Safeguarding Policy
INSO is fully committed to safe recruitment, selection and vetting of all potential new staff, trustees and volunteers and we will ensure rigorous compliance with our Code of Conduct and Safeguarding policy throughout the recruitment process.
Terms & Conditions:
12-month renewable fixed-term contract, $1870 monthly basic salary, 1.75 working days annual leave per month, private health insurance coverage, or allowance.
