We are seeking a skilled Web Developer Consultant to support the Director of Communications and the Head of Data and Digital Solutions in enhancing the organization's online presence. This role will involve a range of web development tasks, focusing on improving website functionality, user experience, and design. The Web Developer will play a key role in aligning the organization's digital presence with its strategic goals, ensuring that all web-based communications are effective, engaging, and accessible. This position will require proactive problem-solving and collaboration with the communications team to deliver high-quality, timely updates and improvements to the website.
Scope of Work
Deliverables:
Monthly Performance Audit:
Comprehensive website speed and performance analysis
Page load time improvements
SSL certificate verification and renewal tracking (Ensure all SSL certificates are renewed and active to prevent website downtime)
WordPress/CMS core and plugin updates (Including necessary theme updates as part of general maintenance)
Technical Maintenance:
Ensure domain security and consistency across all domains (Ensure all purchased domains are secure and up-to-date; handle domain management, including SSL certificates and renewals)
Subdomain and redirect management (Ensure proper redirection of subdomains)
Monitoring and fixing site speed and performance issues, including addressing errors such as 404 pages using Google Search Console
Review and update cookie consent based on current 3rd party embedded media
Pleskdesk/Solutions Center backup and resolution (Resolve and close any backup issues)
Prompt resolution of bugs and/or errors
Migrate Website Theme:
As the current Oxygen theme/module is expiring, assist with migrating to a new theme or platform (Collaborate with IT and Communications Teams to determine next steps, identify a suitable new theme, and facilitate the migration process.)
Development and Optimization:
Collaborate with the Communications team for ongoing website functionality improvements, including fixing navigation issues and optimizing the user experience
Support with creating, integrating and managing HTML for custom sign-up forms in Campaign Monitor, link Campaign Monitor’s reporting features with website traffic for performance tracking
Conduct SEO improvements on technical aspects (URL structure, image optimization, meta data, H1 title updates, and similar issues etc.) to enhance organic search visibility.
Ensure mobile responsiveness and cross-browser compatibility for an optimal user experience.
Review and improve website navigation, focusing on user experience and SEO
Support with improving search functionality, including better indexing and filter options for content discovery
Create homepage wireframe using Adobe XD
Build necessary WordPress content blocks and custom landing pages
Conduct navigation testing to optimize website usability
Collaborate with the Communications team to address ongoing functionality issues
Assist in evolving the website’s look, feel, functionality, and navigation with an eye on future improvements, redesigns where necessary as well as addressing issues as they arise. Develop and implement new functionalities and features based on NetHope’s needs (new page templates, integrations, etc.).
Ensure website integrates seamlessly with external systems and tools (email marketing platforms and forms, fundraising and donor form tools, digital marketing, etc.)
Additional Tasks:
Within first 15 days, conduct website audit to assess the current state, present findings, and provide recommendations and timeline for improvements.
Maintain proper documentation of any changes, additions, or custom code implemented in the site.
Provide training to NetHope staff on how to manage and update website if necessary.
Fully optimized WordPress website with improved speed, security, and functionality
Detailed reports of work completed, including updates and fixes made.
Documentation of code, changes, and features added to the website.
Recommendations for ongoing improvement and future development priorities.
Qualifications:
5-10 years of experience in web development, with a focus on WordPress.
Bachelor's degree in Web Development, Computer Science, Digital Media, or a related field.
Proven experience in web development, including proficiency with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and WordPress.
Proven experience working with nonprofit clients and with training of best practices specifically for nonprofit websites
Strong understanding of web design principles, user experience (UX), and responsive design.
Familiarity with website performance optimization tools (e.g., Google Search Console, PageSpeed Insights).
Experience with website security best practices, including SSL certification management and domain security.
Familiarity with integrating third-party tools such as email marketing platforms (e.g., Campaign Monitor) is an advantage.
Ability to perform regular website audits and apply updates to improve functionality and performance.
Familiarity with SEO best practices, site speed optimization, and accessibility standards.
Project Timeline:
This is a remote, contractor position with an expected workload of 35 hours per month from April 5 to June 30, 2025, with possibility of extension. Some additional hours of preparation should be anticipated at the end of the contract to transition portfolio. Project milestones and deadlines will be defined in collaboration with Communications Director and will include periodic reviews of deliverables throughout the term of the contract.
Selection Criteria:
Technical Expertise: Demonstrated experience in web development, particularly with WordPress, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and user interface improvements. Strong knowledge of web performance monitoring and optimization tools.
Problem Solving: Ability to quickly identify and resolve website issues, including broken links, slow page load times, and structural problems.
Design Sensibility: Experience in web design with a keen eye for detail. Ability to suggest and implement improvements to enhance the visual appeal and user experience of the website.
Collaboration: Proven ability to work with cross-functional teams, including communications, marketing, and content teams, to align website changes with organizational goals.
Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information to non-technical stakeholders.
Proactivity: Demonstrated ability to work independently and take initiative in identifying areas for improvement and suggesting solutions.
Time Management: Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment.
